Air and 10 meter disciplines

The 10 meter air disciplines are where a large share of the world's competitive shooters begin, and where some of its most precise shooting happens. Match air rifles and pistols, shot indoors at 10 meters (about 11 yards), reduce the sport to its purest elements: stillness, alignment, and a clean release.

What it is

Athletes shoot 4.5 mm (.177) pellets at electronic or paper targets 10 meters away. Air rifle is shot standing and unsupported, and air pistol is shot one handed. The ten ring of the air rifle target is a dot half a millimeter across, which is why the discipline is often called the most exacting in the sport.

Both events are core to the Olympic program, with men's, women's, and mixed team competitions in air rifle and air pistol at the Games.

How a match works

A match is a qualification of a fixed number of shots within a time limit, followed by a final for the top eight in which athletes are progressively eliminated.

Because the range is short and indoors, conditions are identical for everyone. There is no wind to read and no recoil to manage, so results come down to technique, routine, and composure, which is exactly what makes the discipline such a good teacher.

Equipment

Match air guns are single shot, highly adjustable, and powered by compressed air. Triggers are measured in grams rather than kilograms, and rifle shooters wear stabilizing jackets, trousers, and flat soled boots within tightly defined rules.

Entry level club equipment is far more affordable, and most clubs lend beginners a rifle or pistol, pellets, and safety gear for their first sessions, which keeps the cost of trying the sport low.

How it is scored

Modern air gun matches score in decimals. Instead of a whole point ten ring, each shot is worth up to 10.9 depending on how close to the exact center it lands, and electronic targets measure and display the score instantly.

Decimal scoring separates athletes whose shooting would be indistinguishable on whole point targets, which suits a discipline this precise. Finals are shot entirely in decimals with progressive elimination.

How to get started

For many shooters 10 meters is the front door of the sport. The equipment has no recoil and little noise, ranges fit in ordinary halls, and in many countries the minimum age for supervised air gun shooting is lower than for firearms, though the rules vary by country.

Join a club with an air range, learn the standing position and shot routine with a coach, and compete early; club leagues and postal matches make the step into competition small. The skills transfer directly to every other discipline in this guide.
